Danish Design and Production Since 2009

By Brorson was founded in 2009 by designer Rikke Brorson, who previously worked as a teacher but longed for something more creative. Starting with her passion for hunting and nature, she began designing a series of interior products for hunting shops, which became an immediate success. When Bo Bedre magazine featured her mugs in October 2012, business took off in the home furnishings industry, and By Brorson exhibited for the first time at the Formland fair in August 2013 – a fair the company has faithfully exhibited at ever since.

Today, Rikke Brorson is based in Tjele outside Viborg, where the shop, showroom and warehouse are all housed under one roof at Bystævnet 2A. The company employs a small team, with Rikke herself handling design, product development, sales and marketing, supported by staff who manage production, shop operations and deliveries.

Made in Denmark as Foundation

By Brorson's truly unique characteristic is its extraordinarily high proportion of Danish production. When the company started, Rikke Brorson set herself the ambitious goal that half of production should be Danish by 2020. This goal was not just met – it was far exceeded. In 2019, 96% of production was Danish, and by 2020 the proportion was up to a full 97-98%. This makes By Brorson one of the most consistent Danish design brands in terms of local production.

All manufacturers are located within a maximum of one and a half hours' drive from the base in Tjele. This gives Rikke Brorson the opportunity to maintain close and ongoing dialogue with her suppliers, closely monitor production and ensure the high quality that is the brand's hallmark. The short distance between idea and finished product also makes it possible to produce according to special wishes and create products in custom sizes.

Design and Design Philosophy

By Brorson's design draws inspiration from Nordic nature and Danish design traditions. The design language is minimalist, simple and functional with a characteristic graphic style. Rikke Brorson's passion for Nordic nature and wildlife is reflected in the products' aesthetics, which combine the natural with the graphic in harmonious balance.

The keywords for By Brorson are quality, material selection, social responsibility, local production, sustainability and durability. The philosophy is clear: sustainability, durability, quality and finish should replace the "buy and throw away" culture. As Rikke Brorson herself expresses it: "The entire philosophy behind my company reflects my personal view of humanity and my views on how we should act in a constantly changing world with a greater focus on people and environment."

Product Range

By Brorson offers a wide range of interior and home accessories primarily made from FSC-certified oak. Products include serving boards, tapas boards, sushi boards, cutting boards, planks, chopping blocks, wooden trays in various sizes and shapes, salt and pepper mills, candlesticks, towel ladders, kitchen roll holders, spice trays and much more.

All wooden products are treated with food-approved bio-oil, making them safe for both serving and storing food. By Brorson also produces metal trays in black and white, as well as textiles such as tea towels and cushion covers with graphic patterns inspired by Nordic nature. The company has developed products for all rooms of the home – from the kitchen to the bathroom, living room and hallway.

A special focus is on sustainability throughout production. By Brorson consciously works to minimise waste – for example, butter boards are made from surplus wood from tapas board production, ensuring that no wood goes to waste.

Market and Customers

By Brorson sells to the home furnishing and design industry, gastronomy and kitchen industry, hotels and restaurants, as well as the lifestyle industry. The company has more than 500 retailers across Europe. One of the most prestigious references is the 3-Michelin-star restaurant Geranium, which uses By Brorson products. That Bo Bedre magazine regularly features By Brorson designs is considered a quality stamp.

The company serves both B2B and B2C markets with a physical shop in Tjele, open Fridays 12-17 and Saturdays 10-14, as well as by appointment.
